Feminist Political Education

Programme Details

Description

Since its inception, the Campaign has identified feminist political education as being central to its work; we have experimented with the different forms that such education can take. Since January 2012, the Campaign has developed a more structured approach to this area of work. Feminist political education provides One in Nine Campaign members with theoretical and conceptual tools for analysing a range of social justice issues relevant to their lives and contexts, including socioeconomic disparities in South Africa and globally, the spread of economic systems such as free-market capitalism and their effect on third world countries, inequitable land distribution in South Africa, violence against women and girls, access to livelihood and basic necessities such as food, sexual rights and politics, the disparity between formal equality before the law and substantive reality in South Africa and feminist responses to these issues. The course is intended to enable participants to develop and enhance critical thinking as well as reading, writing and oral presentation skills. Participants are expected to demonstrate learning through class participation, individual and group presentations in class, writing assignments and independent projects at the end of the year. The only requirement for participation in the course is that individuals have basic literacy and be interested in learning.
